Brown Printing

Q: What is your overall view of your business' environmental responsibilities?

To be as environmentally sound as is possible with today's technology.

Q: What types of eco-friendly inks do you use and why?

We use vegetable based, zero VOC inks. They are less toxic both to produce and as waste.

Q: What types of eco-friendly papers do you carry or use regularly or recommend?

Coated house stocks: Pacesetter Matte & Gloss -- FSC-certified
Uncoated house stock: Cougar Opaque -- FSC-certified & 10% PCW recycled
We recommend and use a great deal of both Neenah and French papers

Q: Do you use any other eco-friendly materials or printing practices?

Our prepress department, traditionally the most toxic area of a print shop, is completely chemical-free, utilizing the Azura C95 plate processor.

We print all larger format and 4-color work on a 23" x 29" Komori LSX 6-color+coater offset printing press, resulting in a savings on water consumption, electricity, and make-ready paper over other older presses.

We have added an Indigo digital press for short press runs, thus cutting material wastes.

Q: Do you have any green certifications (Forest Stewardship Council, Rainforest Alliance, etc.)?

We are FSC- and Rainforest Alliance-certified through SmartWood. (FSC certification # SW-COC-003910

Q: What types of alternative energy sources does your facility use?

None at this time. However we make every effort to reduce energy use.

Q: What are you doing to decrease or eliminate air and water pollution at your facility?

Within the last year we have:

* removed air & water toxins from our prepress department by upgrading to the Azura C95 plate processor
* cut back on both water and electrical consumption by replacing our older 6-color press with the Komori LSX
* initiated an aggressive shop-wide recycling program

We also use zero VOC wash-up cloths and inks.

Q: What do you do to encourage customers to use the above services?

* Advertise our FSC-certification and the environmental improvements we have initiated
* Suggest use of FSC-certified and/or recycled papers
* Suggest combination runs whenever possible to save on additional ink, paper, plates, water & electricity that are used in the make-ready process of multiple runs.

Q: What additional steps do you plan to take in the future to make your practices and facility more environmentally friendly?

Continuation of less waste of power, time, and materials through continued upgrades to equipment and supplies used. Alternative energy.
