AIGA Portland Roundtable Regarding PortlandOnline.com

I wrote something several months ago about a city of Portland initiative that really got my hackles up. They are basically crowdsourcing the redesign of PortlandOnline.com, but not offering any compensation to the designers (other than the infamous “site credit”). Lloyd Winter IV - Illustrator/Graphic Designer

The perfect creative storm has developed within the Portland design community in the form of Designer/Illustrator Lloyd Eugene Winter IV. Art, design, music, and technology converge for Lloyd into a balanced, lush life. His imaginative style first developed in the rugged forests of Idaho, evolved during his years as a Fine Arts Major, and thrives with each creative collaboration that passes through his hands.

Graphic Designer by day, illustrator/poster artist by night – Lloyd is happy making art for a living.

We want your B-sides. You know the projects we mean: You came up with a great idea, but they chose the design equivalent of filler jingles written by Ringo. They picked not your anthem to white space, but the graphical version of a boy band: tolerated by all, but loved by none.

Let your creative genius be known! Give those unwittingly discarded designs their day in the sun - unfettered by realities like budget, timelines or the committee meatgrinder.

Sustainability Initiative

A new program aimed at promoting sustainable practices within the design industry has been launched by AIGA Portland. To assure the degree of emphasis needed to significantly move the program forward, a new Sustainability Chair position was created on the Board. Lisa Holmes, the current Secretary, was named to the position.

Wednesday, January 13th was our first Green Salon Meetup Event. This is a chance for designers to talk about what sustainable design means to them. A member of the AIGA Portland Green Team, Martha Koenig, attended the lunch and these are her observations.
