Save the Date!

AIGA presents a discussion panel at the FutureM conference hosted by MITX.

In the past decade, designers have increasingly been involved in creating value for clients (whether public or business) through applying design thinking to complex problems, even when the outcomes may be more strategic, multi-dimensional and conceptual than what most would consider traditional communication design.

How might we educate designers as problem solvers of the future, now? How might a designer evolve to solve the future problems clients & businesses pose? How does a creative business need to evolve to stay competitive and offer their clients competitive thinking?

As AIGA, the professional association for design, reevaluates its mission to “advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force” for its centennial in 2014, we invite you to join the discussion with our panelists ranging from design educators to investors in design-driven businesses.

Registration info to follow soon.

As the digital world rapidly overtakes more and more of our life, one fact still remains.

Designers love books.

We love the texture, we love the intimacy, and some of us even like the smell. Just like silk screened rock posters & letterpress business cards, books never go out of style. To prove this we will bring you on an exclusive tour of one of the most prestigious and well-respected bookmakers in the country right here in the heart of Boston, Acme Bookbinding. We'll show you how their exquisitely printed artifacts & centuries old techniques merge with newer digital technologies to bring you the 21st century book.

Based on the popular TV show, we will be having an insightful one-on-one interview with Paula Scher, a principal in the New York office of the distinguished international design consultancy Pentagram. Interviewed by Laura DesEnfants, you will hear how Paula has developed identities, packaging for a broad range of clients that includes, among others, The New York Times Magazine, Perry Ellis, Bloomberg, Target, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the New 42nd Street, the New York Botanical Garden, and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart. Paula's graphic identities for Citibank and Tiffany & Co. have become case studies for the contemporary regeneration of classic American brands.

In 1998 Scher was named to the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame, in 2000 she received the Chrysler Award for Innovation in Design. She has served on the national board of AIGA and was president of its New York chapter from 1998 to 2000 and in 2001 she received the AIGA Medal.  Her work is represented in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich; the Denver Art Museum; and the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
