“New Contexts/New Practices” will generate and publish ideas about how design education will address the defining trends of contemporary practice and culture. This authoring conference will build consensus and action plans for where we should be heading if graphic design is to remain relevant in the 21st century and if we are to achieve the competencies outlined in AIGA Defining the Designer of 2015.
A pre-conference workshop on “Designing Flexible Curricula” will be held on the afternoon of October 8, immediately before the opening of the conference. The workshop will address the design of curricular structures that respond to shifting conditions for the field; structures that are agile and that consider pedagogical approaches within rapidly changing social, economic, and technological imperatives.

Returning Spring 2010
Creating compelling products, services, brands and interactions with people-centered design research methods.
At “Image, Space, Object,” small teams of participants and studio mentors work together to create multi-dimensional environments, human interactions and brand strategies. User-centered narratives serve as a starting place for the design of graphic, interaction, product and environmental experiences. Research, modeling, team ideation and experiential prototyping are employed throughout the three days to produce tangible final presentations that can be brought back to work and used with your design teams.
For more information, check out the schedule and speaker bios on the Image Space Object website.

Featuring a broad spectrum of work--from client driven projects; identities, catalogs, and typefaces; to personal experiments, such as ink drawings, collage, and silkscreen--this exhibition presents new creative avenues within the field of design...

Community Event: PechaKucha Night - Volume 8
Cost: Free and open to the public!
Japanese for “the sound of conversation,” this event features a succession of 14 speakers, each sharing new ideas about topics ranging from visual art, architecture, and technology to food, film, music, photography and furniture design through a vibrant 400 second long presentation (20 slides X 20 seconds each). The rapid-fire style keeps audiences engaged while breaking down barriers between different design communities. The goal is to expose and attract new talent and ideas, the foster existing creative community in an innovative platform, and incite meaningful collaborations among presenters and audience members.
PechaKucha, pronounced “Peh-chak-chah,” began in 2003 in Tokyo, Japan, when the Architecture firm Klein Dytham Architecture started holding design “show and tells” amoungst their own emplyees. The presentations last 400 seconds (20 slides x 20 seconds a slide) and presenters have NO choice but to continue moving as the slides advance. The style has spread virally to over 200 cities across the world as a way to have many presenters sharing their ideas within the course of one event.
Doors open at 7pm
Presentations 8:20-10:30pm
